Preparation

1. Do EXIN or its examination agents provide training?
No. As EXIN is an independent examination institute, EXIN does not give courses itself and is not attached to any training institute. EXIN manages and coordinates the development and quality control of the examination and certification process. EXIN and the examination agents provide worldwide exam services. A list of training providers can be located on our website.back to FAQ categories
2. Where can I find a training provider nearby?
A list of training providers worldwide is provided on the EXIN website. You can also search here for a training provider near you.back to FAQ categories
3. Do I have to do a formal course at a training provider before being allowed into Foundation examinations?
No, you don't have to take a course. You can also prepare for the Foundation examinations by self-study. The following two links may help you to further your studies: information on the content of our exams and tips on how to prepare for your exam.back to FAQ categories
4. Do I need to get pre-study materials for IT Service Management courses based on ITIL®?

Most training providers make training materials available during the course and do not use specific pre-study materials. Among the materials provided are often books about ITIL®, like the books about Service Support and Service Delivery.

If you are planning to study IT Service Management, based on ITIL®, buying and reading the books on Service Support and Service Delivery is a good starting point. To prepare for the Foundation in IT Service Management examination there is an excellent overview of the issues in the itSMF book 'IT Service Management, an introduction'. Other books, like the 'Guide to IT Service Management' contain interesting chapters on subjects in the field and experiences of practitioners.

Sample examinations can be ordered in EXIN's e-bookshop. This may also help you to prepare for all of the IT Service Management examinations. See exam requirements for literature needed or recommended for studying. Information on books on IT Service Management can be found in EXIN's e-bookshop. Our materials cover all IT Service Management examinations.back to FAQ categories
5. Do I need to take an accredited training course to write an exam in IT Service Management?

Accredited training is always recommended. It is mandatory that you participate in an accredited training course for Practitioner in IT Service Management (based on ITIL®) and for Manager in IT Service Management (based on ITIL®), otherwise you will not be able to write the examinations. The accreditation of courses that lead to the Foundation Certificate is voluntary. However, EXIN encourages all candidates to take their course at an accredited training provider.

7. How much does training cost?
It is up to the training providers to determine prices of training. Please ask your training provider about the training fees.back to FAQ categories

There's a difference between registration for self-study candidates and candidates who have taken a formal course with an (authorized) training provider. This is dealt with in more detail on our website.back to FAQ categories
2. I did not pass my examination. When can I rewrite?
In order to rewrite an exam, the candidate can apply to EXIN or the examination agent in their region. They can tell you when and where you can rewrite the examination. The option of taking the EXIN IT Service Management Foundation examination via a testing center ( Pearson VUE or Thomson Prometric) will be especially attractive in those cases where no EXIN Authorized Examination Centers or EXIN regional offices or agents are nearby, and is an excellent solution for individual candidates who need a re-sit.back to FAQ categories

6. Does EXIN offer specific guidelines for accreditation of training providers?

Yes, EXIN has published an accreditation guide for training providers, which is available from September 2006. This new setup and fee structure apply to all new applications which we receive from 1 October 2006. Please contact our 此邮件地址受阻挡spam的自动程序保护,需要激活Javascript功能才能查阅。 or call +31 30 234 48 25 for more information.

Several requirements have to be met in order to be accredited. For example:

  • Course materials are of sufficient quality and fully comply with EXIN guidelines
  • There are set entry requirements for students enrolling in IT Service Management and/or ASL training courses

7. Are there any other special requirements that must be met before receiving an EXIN accreditation?

Yes, a training provider’s in-course assessment, which is part of the Manager’s Certificate in IT Service Management, will also be assessed in the EXIN accreditation audit. This is because the in-course assessment forms a major part in the results that lead to a candidate’s certificate. To ensure the quality of the in-course assessment meets international set standards, EXIN provides manuals and training for course instructors in IT Service Manager.

8. Do accredited IT Service Management training providers limit the number of admissions to their courses?
Yes, they do, the limit is six to 16. This is set out in the accreditation requirements for the course, based on internationally and independently set standards. Questions for AECs

1. What specifications should an examination room adhere to?

There are no strict rules for the examination room. However, there are two main principles here. One is that the environment should be comfortable for the candidates. They should not be hindered during the examination (e.g. by temperature or noise) and not be diverted (e.g. by people passing by or TV screens).

It is important that the environment should not be conducive to cheating. Hence, the candidates should sit at least 1.20 meters apart from each other, so that they cannot peek at each other's answers.

The supervisor should at all times during the examination be able to see and hear all candidates. No books or notes are allowed in the examination room and the use of cellphones or other communication equipment is prohibited during the examination session. With the possible exception of an EXIN auditor, no other persons are allowed access to the examination room other than the candidates and the supervisor.back to FAQ categories
2. Does EXIN limit admissions? How many students are allowed into an exam?
Yes there are some limitations, depending on the number of supervisors available and the exam venue. EXIN requires each examination room to at least have one supervisor, and the candidates need to be sitting far enough apart (minimal distance 1.20 m) not to be able to read each other's paper. The maximum number of candidates per examination session is 40.back to FAQ categories
3. Can I order extra examination papers if needed?
If the time allows it, an AEC may order additional papers for an exam session for which they have already ordered exam papers. The shipping time may especially be a problem. Therefore it's best to order two or three extra exam papers for a session if you are unsure of the exact number of participants. To help ensure there is no charge for the extra exams, notify EXIN two days prior to the exam date that there will be left over exam papers.back to FAQ categories
4. Can I keep unused examination papers for next time?
No, this is not allowed. Keeping the unused papers may seem economical, but in reality often causes problems. EXIN regularly introduces new examination papers or improved versions of papers and retracts older versions. If obsolete versions arrive at EXIN, they either can't be processed in the normal way, causing delays, or may cause erroneous results for the candidates.back to FAQ categories
5. If candidates have difficulty in understanding the question, can the supervisor help?
No. The supervisor is not allowed to interfere with the examination ever. The supervisor should note the candidate's complaint down in the Supervisor's Report. If necessary, EXIN can afterwards correct the question and compensate all candidates in that examination if the wording of the question was misleading. This prevents supervisors misleading or even leading candidates in answering of exam questions. Note that exam supervisors are not necessarily ITIL®-certified, so the risk of misleading a candidate when trying to help is considerable.back to FAQ categories
6. What happens with a completed examination and how do we track the results?

For multiple-choice examinations that are not web-based or organized by Prometric or Pearson Vue, the completed examination is returned to EXIN. At EXIN the forms (the Personal Data Form and the result form) will be handled and the candidate's details and results are registered in the administrative system.
Result papers and certificates are printed and sent to the AEC. The process at EXIN normally takes less than a week. With the time added for the shipment, the candidate normally will receive the result within four weeks after the examination.

In some cases, like multiple choice examinations that are web-based or taken via Prometric or Pearson VUE the results are available immediately after the session.
Certificates for the candidates that passed are printed at EXIN and sent (normally within four weeks) to the AEC or, in the case of Prometric or Pearson VUE examinations, to the candidates.

Essay examinations, like the IT Service Manager examinations, have to be marked by experts. These experts are practitioners in the field and have to combine their role of examiner with their job.

Each examination paper is first marked independently by two examiners. The examiners compare their results for each of the candidates and discuss all substantial differences. Based on this comparison the final result for each candidate is established. Normally this process takes five weeks from the date the papers arrive at EXIN. With the time added for the shipment, the candidate will normally receive the result within eight weeks after the examination.back to FAQ categories

Service Level Management (ITSLM) will be replaced by IPAD from 1 January 2008. From 1 January 2007, the following single process exams will be replaced by clustered exams:
  • Availability Management (ITAM) and Capacity Management (ITCAM), replaced by the fourth cluster
  • Financial Management (ITFM), replaced by IPAD
  • Incident Management/Service Desk (ITIM) and Problem Management (ITPM), replaced by IPSR
Please read our press release for more information. back to FAQ categories
4. In IT Service Management Practitioner, which single process exams will be replaced by clustered exams?
The IT Service Management Practitioner clusters combine the following ITIL®-processes:
  • IPRC: Change Management, Release Management, Configuration Management
  • IPSR: Incident Management, Problem Management, function of the Service Desk
  • IPAD (expected in March 2007): Service Level Management, Financial Management
  • Plan and Improve (working title, expected around July 2007): Availability Management, Capacity Management, IT Service Continuity Management.
Please read our press release for more information. back to FAQ categories
5. Are there other plans to change the current IT Service Management, based on ITIL® certification scheme?
Yes, EXIN is currently considering some ideas and suggestions from individual IT experts, EXIN partners and others from the business/IT sector. Following demand from IT professionals in the field, EXIN's future plans include developing other clusters of Practitioner certificates in the domains of Service Support and Service Delivery.

The recently launched cluster Support & Restore will consist of Service Desk, Incident Management and Problem Management. EXIN is also discussing with other parties involved in the ITIL® certification scheme to change the examination for the Manager's certificate in the near future.

The main idea is replacing the current requirement of passing two examinations (roughly in Support and Delivery) by introducing an intermediate level certificate (Advanced Professional in IT Service Management). The training for the Manager's certificate could then be more focused on managerial issues.back to FAQ categories
6. Are my old certificates now worthless? Is it necessary for me to get new ones?
No, your EXIN certificates always keep their value. If in the future certain rights can be obtained from the Practitioner certificate Release & Control, similar rights will be granted to those who obtained the individual certificates for Change and Configuration Management. However, additional requirements may be set to prove knowledge and experience in Release Management.back to FAQ categories
7. If I have passed one of the examinations in Change or Configuration Management, can I skip part of the examination for the Practitioner Release & Control?
No, this will not be the case. The relationship between the processes will be an important issue in the new examinations. Maybe your training provider could offer you a program taking into account that you already proved your skills in part of the subjects in the new Practitioner track.back to FAQ categories
8. Can I do an IT Service Management exam in my own language?
EXIN is constantly developing ways in which to offer exams in different languages, in line with market demands. Currently, the following exams have been translated:

9. Do candidates who do not write exams in their native language get extra time to write the exam?
It is not always possible to allow extra time, and experience shows that in most cases the time available is sufficient, even to compensate for the fact that the examination is not in the native language of the candidate. In special cases an AEC may allow candidates an extra 15 minutes for each hour of normal duration of the examination. This exception should always be requested at EXIN two weeks in advance, and it must be mentioned in the Supervisor's Report (to be supplied for each session by the supervisor).back to FAQ categories

12. What's ITIL® Refresh, and what's the motivation for it?
Essentially, ITIL® Refresh is a global effort to update ITIL® in line with current business requirements and best IT practices. The ITIL® Refresh aims to "focus on easier implementation and improved business benefits from the use of ITIL®". No existing IT Service Management qualifications will be invalidated by the changes, because the core principles remain unchanged. They assist EXIN with translations, marking of essay style examinations, accreditation of training providers and services & support to candidates. EXIN EAs organize examination sessions for independent EXIN exams and issue the EXIN certificates. EAs also help organize examination panels with local experts to review the translation of examinations and mark essay examinations.back to FAQ categories
15. Are examinations part of the training course, or are they a separate thing altogether?
More and more training organizations provide the service of organizing an independent EXIN examination session for groups of their students. But if not explicitly stated, organizing the examination is not part of the offering of the training providers, nor is the price of the examination automatically included in the price of the course. Be sure to ask your training provider for more information on this.back to FAQ categories
16. Are IT Service Management training organizations audited by EXIN?
Training providers, which provide courses for the Manager's and the Practitioner's Certificate in IT Service Management, have to be accredited by EXIN. The accreditation of courses that lead to the Foundation Certificate is voluntary. However, EXIN encourages all training providers to be accredited for this Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management. The EXIN accreditation is intended to safeguard and guarantee the quality of IT Service Management training providers. Accreditation of training providers is useful for potential students, as it guarantees the training being a quality preparation for the exam. EXIN greatly values the examinees to be trained by professional, accredited ITIL® training providers. Apart from the initial audit needed to determine whether the training can be accredited, EXIN performs audits during training sessions of the accredited training organizations. In these audits the training organization, the courseware and the trainers will be assessed against the rules and standards set out in the EXIN accreditation regulations.back to FAQ categories
